OBSP Adds ‘Lend Me A Tenor’ to Impressive 2014 Season at the Levoy

June 26, 2014 — The Off Broad Street Players (OBSP), the resident theatre company at the historic Levoy Theatre, has announced what OBSP officials call an upgrade to an already stellar season. In place of the previously announced The Last Romance, OBSP will instead stage the Tony Award-winning Lend Me A Tenor. Presented by arrangement with Samuel French, the comedy will take to the Levoy’s stage Friday, October 17, at 8 p.m.; Saturday October 18, at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, October 19, at 3 p.m.

Written by Ken Ludwig, the play premiered in 1986 and earned Tony Awards for Best Actor in a Play and Best Direction of a Play, five other Tony nominations, and a nomination for the Laurence Olivier Award for Comedy of the Year. Set in 1934, the farce centers around the visit of a world-famous Italian tenor to the Cleveland Grand Opera Company and the general manager’s assistant who mistakes the famous singer for dead and then goes on in his place. The play calls for a cast of four men and four women; audition dates will be announced soon. It joins The King and I and Oliver on the list of remaining OBSP shows this season.

Lend Me A Tenor is an even better fit for our group and our audiences,” said David Halter, president of the OBSP board of trustees. “The show has it all—comedy, romance, more comedy, and not one but two Otellos! It will also enable us to tap the talents of more of our members and to draw larger audiences through name recognition and the healing—and ticket-selling—power of laughter.”

“We were very pleased to work with our partners in OBSP to make this change happen,” added Jessica Doheny, executive director of the Levoy Theatre. “Both of our organizations are committed to increasing an appreciation of the arts in South Jersey, and Lend Me A Tenor adds an extra bit of fun to that goal. We’re very pleased to add it to the great things we having coming up the rest of this impressive season.”
