March 17, 2015 — The cast of the Off Broad Street Players’ (OBSP) upcoming production of Rent will perform this Saturday at 6 p.m. in the Community Room of the John C. Anderson Apartments in Philadelphia, an affordable housing facility for low-income seniors that is friendly to the LGBT community. The free event is open to the public and will be followed by a conversation with the cast and others on HIV/AIDS and the powerful words and music of the Broadway hit.

OBSP will open its production of Jonathan Larson’s Pulitzer Award- and five-time Tony Award-winning musical at the Levoy Theatre in Millville, New Jersey, on Friday, April 17.

Located at 251 South 13th Street in Philadelphia, the John C. Anderson Apartments are the first LGBT-friendly senior housing development in the country financed, in part, with the sale of low-income housing tax credits. Created in the heart of Philadelphia’s “Gayborhood,” the apartments offer safe, affordable, and friendly housing to 56 low-income seniors.

Rent tells the heart-wrenching stories of members of a group of young artists coping with landlords, love, elusive muses, and the ever-present epidemic of AIDS in New York’s East Village in the early 1990s. Loosely based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera La bohème, the show contains autobiographical elements from the life of creator Larson, who tragically died suddenly just before the show’s critically acclaimed opening.

OBSP will present Rent Friday and Saturday, April 17 and 18, at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, April 19, at 3 p.m.; Thursday, April 23, at 7 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, April 24 and 25, at 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, April 26, at 3 p.m. Tickets are available at
