OBSP to receive grant funding from Cumberland County Cultural & Heritage Commission

Off Broad Street Players Awarded $8,750 Grant

Cumberland County Cultural & Heritage Commission

Millville, NJ – January 22nd, 2018

The Off Broad Street Players Board of Directors are thrilled to announce that OBSP has been awarded 2018 grant funding from the Cumberland County Cultural & Heritage Commission totaling $8,750!

Funding for the grant is made possible by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

The award for the 2018 calendar year marks the highest grant award received in OBSP’s twenty year history.

When asked for comment on the received funding, Artistic Director and OBSP Founder, Walter A. Webster, stated, “with the help of the Commission, we are beyond excited to continue our commitment to producing great community theatre as well as broadening our educational mission for both children and adults throughout South Jersey and beyond”.

OBSP’s mission focuses on promoting the study of Musical Theatre and plays. The organization also serves to promote and provide the public with an opportunity to have a quality, community theatre at affordable prices through the efforts of individuals in Southern New Jersey and the surrounding area who display an interest in theatre productions.

OBSP President Robin Wood reiterated Mr. Webster’s comments noting “OBSP is honored to receive the Cumberland County Cultural Heritage Grant. The funding allows us to continue to expand on our community outreach through our performances. We are blessed to be the resident theatre company in the beautiful and historic Levoy Theatre. We have grown each year through our partnership with the Levoy. Thank you to the Cumberland County Cultural Heritage Commission”.

The arts re-grant from the Cumberland County Cultural & Heritage Commission focuses on supporting organizations within Cumberland County that offer a high level of quality programming with anticipated value to the community.

The Grants Review Panel cited OBSP’s ‘great productions, exploring new topics [including] LGBTQ inclusion, and creating a long bench of excellent volunteers.’ The panel was also impressed not only by the organization’s production/acting skills, but the organizations value in training people in non-profit management.

2018 Season Announced!

Posted by on Jun 26, 2017 in Announcements, Press Release | No Comments

OBSP Announces its 2018 Season!

Welcome to the 2018 season of Broadway at the beautiful, majestic Levoy Theatre in downtown Millville! As the Founder and Artistic Director of the Off Broad Street Players, I would like to invite you to experience the wonderful feelings that are associated with home.

As we begin our 21st season, we decided to produce a season of shows that were performed elsewhere during our twenty year rich history. We now have the luxury of producing these timeless classics again with “all of the bells and whistles” at our permanent home in Millville. Fall in love again with Rodgers & Hammerstein, belong again with a group of  Southern ladies who are the dearest of friends, experience your “inner child magic and belief” with a Disney classic, relive family values that are tested with a Neil Simon, Pulitzer prize-winning classic, and finally come home again realizing that “any dream will do” when family sticks together.

WE ARE FINALLY HOME… please, come join our family!

Most sincerely,
Walter A. Webster
Founder & Artistic Director– Off Broad Street Players

First we kick things off with a revival of a classic…

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s first collaboration, OKLAHOMA!, set the standards of musical theatre forever. In a Western Indian territory just after the turn of the century, the high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the colorful background against which Laurey, an independent farmgirl, falls for a charming cowboy, Curly. When romance is threatened by a sinister farmhand, tension rises within the love triangle. Dreams — and nightmares — present themselves, but will the couple part ways forever or will they unite? Although the road to true love never runs smooth, love’s journey is as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road. With boot-stomping energy, OKLAHOMA! celebrates the vigor of America’s pioneering spirit.

Music by RICHARD RODGERS
Book & Lyrics by OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II
Based on the play “Green Grow the Lilacs” by Lynn Riggs
Original Dances by Agnes de Mille

Directed by Walter A. Webster

*OKLAHOMA! is presented through special arrangement with R & H Theatricals: www.rnh.com.

Then we reintroduce our children’s review with…
Disney’s My Son Pinocchio, Jr.

This new musical, based on the 2000 made-for-television movie “Geppetto,” retells the classic Disney story from Geppetto’s perspective. It features the beloved classic songs “When You Wish Upon a Star” and “I’ve Got No Strings,” alongside new songs by Oscar & Grammy Award-winner Stephen Schwartz. Join the Blue Fairy, Stromboli and a lively cast of characters as Geppetto journeys beyond the toy shop to discover the true meaning of family. When the Blue Fairy grants Geppetto’s wish to bring his beloved puppet to life, he struggles to make his son “the perfect boy.” It is only when faced with the thought of never seeing Pinocchio again that Geppetto truly learns the joys of being a father and loving his child unconditionally.
Music & Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz
Book by David Stern
“When You Wish Upon a Star” & “I’ve Got No Strings” Music by Leigh Harline
Lyrics by Ned Washington
from the Walt Disney Motion Picture PINOCCHIO
Directed by Tyler Daddario

Choreographed by Katie Kiessling

Music Directed by Walter A. Webster

*DISNEY’S MY SON PINOCCHIO, JR. is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI).All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.MTIshows.com

Then we have our spring play just in time for Mother’s Day…
Steel Magnolias

Honey, it’s the 1980s. At Truvy’s beauty shop in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where anyone who is “anybody” comes to have their hair done, the motto is: “There is no such thing as natural beauty.” These Louisianian women are all sass and brass. Witty Southern banter flows like refreshing sweet tea on a hot summer day. Through clouds of hairspray and over the buzz of blow dryers, six Southern spitfires gather each week to gossip. But those bonds are about to be tested when these ladies face a life-changing event. The inspiration for both the 1989 and 2012 films of the same name, STEEL MAGNOLIAS is a hilarious story of love, loss, and enduring friendship.
By Robert Harling
Directed by Lisa Piccioni

*STEEL MAGNOLIAS is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York.

In the summer we offer a revival of a Disney favorite…

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast

Step into the enchanted world of this “tale as old as time.” A musical based on the 1991 Academy Award-winning animated film and featuring all of the beloved songs, Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST follows a young woman who stumbles upon a secluded castle occupied by a monstrous beast and a host of enchanted objects trying to break a witch’s spell before it is too late. To break the spell, the Beast must learn to love and be loved before the last rose petal falls, but time is running out. If the Beast does not soon find true love, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity. “Be our guest” when the Tony Award-nominated, eye-popping spectacle that has won the hearts of countless audiences worldwide sweeps onto the Levoy Theatre’s stage.
Music by Alan Menken
Lyrics by Howard Ashman & Tim Rice
Book by Linda Woolverton
Orginally Directed by Robert Jess Roth
Originally Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions
Directed & Choreographed by John T. Stephan

Musical Direction by Walter A. Webster

*DISNEY’S BEAUTY AND THE BEAST is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI).

All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.MTIShows.com

Then we take a closer look at the family unit in…

Lost in Yonkers

LOST IN YONKERS is a heartfelt and hilarious coming-of-age story about a very eccentric family by America’s great comic playwright, Neil Simon. Like many of Simon’s plays, LOST IN YONKERS is drawn from his experiences growing up in New York City. Set during World War II, two young brothers, Arty and Jay, are sent to live with their formidable German Jewish immigrant grandmother, the sweet but mentally challenged Aunt Bella, and Uncle Louie, a small-time hoodlum running away from gangsters. LOST IN YONKERS tells the story of a family coping with the challenges of keeping together during World War II and the struggles to balance love, duty, devotion, and trust with tough times.
By Neil Simon
Directed by Walter A. Webster

*LOST IN YONKERS is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH, INC.

Lastly we inspire you to dream with…

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

One of the most enduring shows of all time, this roller-coaster ride of a musical promises to be a technicolor extravaganza of Biblical proportions. JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT retells the classic story of Joseph, his prophetic dreams, and the coat of many colors. Told entirely through song, this magical musical is packed full of unforgettable songs set to a cornucopia of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock ‘n’ roll. With spectacular designs, foot-tapping rhythms, and high-energy dances, join us as we take you from Canaan, to Egypt, and home again, on the amazing journey of this dreamer.
Lyrics by Tim Rice
Music by Andrew Lloyd WebberDirected by Tyler Daddario & Walter A. Webster

Asst. Directed/Choreographed by Katie Kiessling

Musical Direction by Shannon Sheridan

*JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT is presented by arrangement with The Musical Company, LP.
